Note: originally written Wednesday Nov. 5, but for some reason the publish function did not work. This is my "morning after the revolution" post.
One of the great things about America is that it can rise to the challenge of the moment and reinvent itself. It's easy to get caught up in the euphoria of the celebrations, but beyond that, there is something far more historic, far more critical.
An entire people has risen up peacefully and chosen a different path. The process was hard-fought, with passions and strong words flying on both sides. But in the end, our nation took a look at the way things have been going and at the road ahead--and decided to take a different road. It's wonderful and breathtaking and it should make every American proud.
Last night we once again stood up and showed the world why we are a beacon for freedom-loving peoples everywhere. We showed that we are stronger than those who would stir up fear and despair. We reminded them and ourselves that ours is a democracy where the people can choose change, and the government is there to serve the people. Think about it--in lots of places this kind of tectonic shift would only be possible through violent overthrow. Not here. We stood together for change. It took an enormous amount of work by millions of people, make no mistake. But in the end, the vote was the mightiest weapon used, or needed.
Congratulations, President-Elect Obama. Wow,it's amazing to be able to write that. I think I saw a little bit of relief on McCain's face last night. Enjoy the moment. The toughest part of the job begins today. It's all for keeps now.

Time to make history, America
Less than 24 hours from now the polls open on the most historic election day in my lifetime. There is a palpable sense of excitement in the air. Because tomorrow America has the chance to do something that we were told would never happen. I don't need to rehash a subject that's been talked to death. But I need to say that I'm amazed and thrilled that this day has come.
I am sitting on the edge of my seat worrying that McCain will pull off an upset. If that happens I'll be sad and disappointed but not really surprised. After all, he's the kind of guy who we were told would always be the President.
But through it all, I still have hope. Hope that the the voters will truly put "country first" and choose a better future for this nation. Hope that they will rise above the things that they were always taught about who can be President and who cannot. Hope that they will ignore the fear-mongers and vote with courage, for change.
Barack Obama represents our best hope for the future. The time for talking is over (thank goodness!). Now it's time to get out there and make history.
